THURSDAY, AUGUST 28, 2003 THE HARTFORD COURANT TOWN NEWS BRIEFING EAST HAMPTON Five Injured In Collision Of Ambulance, SUV EAST HAMPTON -Police are investigating a collision Monday about 6 p.m. between the town's volunteer ambulance and a sport utility vehicle at Route 16 and Main Street that slightly injured five people. The accident happened when the East Hampton Volunteer Ambulance, southbound on Main Street on the way to an emergency call, attempted to cross Route 16 and collided with an eastbound 2002 Ford Escape, police said. Both vehicles went off the road, and the Escape rolled on its side, said Sgt. Michael Green.

The vehicles were heavily damaged. The driver of the SUV, Thomas Hardin, 34, of East Haddam, was flown by Life Star to Hartford Hospital. He was treated for minor injuries and released, police said. The ambulance driver, Christopher McDowell, 25, and his crew, Jessica Burdick, 18; Shawn Benoit, 21; and Raymond 'Swol, 30; all of East Hampton, were also treated for minor injuries and released, investigators said. MANCHESTER Motorcyclist Charged In September Accident MANCHESTER A fatal motorcycle accident that police said was caused by racing has led to the arrest of the surviving motorcyclist.

Joshua Phillips, 23, of 184 Brent Road, was arrested on a warrant Tuesday charging him with first -degree reckless endangerment, reckless driving, racing and driving at an unreasonable speed, Traffic Don Poist said. He was in custody at police headquarters Tuesday evening with bail set at $25,000. Phillips suffered internal injuries in the crash and severe injuries to his left leg that make walking difficult, Poist said. William Tedford, 19, died in the Sept. 14 accident.

Witnesses told police that they saw the two motorcyclists speeding east on East Middle Turnpike, popping their front "wheels in the air. Tedford's motorcycle hit the left front end of a car driven by an East Hartford woman. Phillips' motorcycle hit the left rear of the car, which had just started pulling out of Ferguson Road. Witnesses told police the motorcycles were traveling 80 to 90 mph. Police do not plan to arrest the driver of the car, Poist said.

EAST HARTFORD Man Pleads Guilty In Incident With Minor A Hartford man pleaded guilty Tuesday to two counts of risk of injury to: a minor in the alleged sexual assault of a 12-year-old last year in East Hartford. Jose L. Rosado, 31, was arrested on a warrant charging him with two counts of first -degree sexual assault and two counts of risk of the morals of a minor in July 2002. Rosado agreed Tuesday in Hartford Superior Court to plead guilty on the risk of injury charges in exchange for having the sexual-assault charges withdrawn. Under the plea agreement, Rosado will be sentenced Oct.

23 to five years in prison and 15 years of probation. AREAWIDE Police Warn Residents Of Phone Scam COVENTRY- -Police are warning the public about a scam in which a person claiming to be from Medicare calls residents and tries to set up an appointment to conduct a home inspection. After getting a complaint from a resident who said a caller purporting to be from Medicare set up an appointment, police investigated and found that Medicare never does home inspections and said the incident was a scam. The case was under investigation and police are advising anyone who gets such a call to contact police. HARTFORD Lots Near Concert To Open At 2 P.M.

Cortes, 21, of 4-G Amato Drive at his home and charged him with operating a drug factory, possession of Ecstasy, possession of Ecstasy with intent to sell, possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to sell and possession of drug paraphernalia. Acting on information obtained about Cortes' activities, police searched his home June 10.
