How do I talk to someone at the DMV in Illinois? ›

REAL ID applicants have the option to make an appointment at one of the 30 appointment facilities, or they can visit a walk-in facility. To determine what facilities require an appointment or to make an appointment, please visit Secretary of State Facility Appointments.

You may verify your license status by visiting the IDFPR website License Look-Up feature and following the instructions listed. The Department considers License Look-Up to be the most accurate and current evidence of the status of your license as it is updated daily.

Vehicle-related transactions, such as license plate sticker renewal and title and registration, are walk-in services and do not require an appointment.

According to the state, the fee for a REAL ID is the same as it is for a standard Illinois driver's license or state ID. That means the cost of either an Illinois driver's license, or a REAL ID complaint driver's license, is $30. The cost of either a state ID, or a REAL ID compliant state ID, is $20.

New walk-in senior DMV facilities now open after secretary of state appointments program launched. This month, the secretary of state started the Skip the Line Program, which means most facilities are by appointment only.

What if there is an emergency and someone needs to renew their driver's license immediately? They can visit the Loop facility – the only DMV in the Chicago area that does not take appointments and is walk-in only.

What if My License is Expired? You have up to one year to renew an expired license in Illinois. If you fail to renew in the time period, you will be required to take additional tests to renew your card. There are no listed penalty fees for late renewals.

REAL ID DLs are valid for the same length of time as standard DLs. REAL ID identification cards issued to applicants 65 or older will expire in eight years. REAL ID disabled ID cards will expire in eight years. All other REAL ID identification cards are valid for the same length of time as standard ID cards.

If you are traveling internationally you will still need your passport. If you are traveling domestically, you will only need one valid form of identification – either your REAL ID or another acceptable alternative such as a passport, not both.
